The 2024 LEÇA CHESS OPEN edition has now come to its conclusion, in a strong and competitive chess event that took place in Leça da Palmeira, Portugal, between July 31 st and August 6 th , 2024.

After 9 rounds and 7 days, we can say that the event was a success, bringing to the municipality of Matosinhos a total of 205 chess players (that compares to 140 players in 2022 and 171 in 2023) and their companions, representing a total of 28 countries, that have shared with us their passion for Chess.

205 participants, of which 116 portuguese players (56,5%) and 89 other of foreign nationalitiy

(43,5%), 55 titled players (GM’s, IM’s, FM’s and other – 27% of the total) and 90 young players from the U08 – U20 categories (44%), are some of the numbers revealed by LEÇA CHESS OPEN 2024 (LCO 2024), that means, not only a growing participation of chess players in general, but also an increasing representation of young players, titled players and women participation, which in this edition has brought 32 women players to the event.

We would like to emphasize the IM Norm obtained by Ilinca, Felix-Antonio, a young FM from Romania, that makes us very happy and brings additional motivation to enhance the competitiveness aspect of the upcoming LEÇA CHESS OPEN editions.

We would like to thank all LCO 2024 participants for their presence in the event, hoping that all of you may have spent a wonderful week in Leça da Palmeira, may have taken advantage of the gorgeous place and surroundings of our municipality, a land of horizon and sea.

LEÇA CHESS OPEN will hopefully be back in 2025, in a competitiveness reinforced edition, trying to cope with the players expectations that, each year, look for this chess event.
