Leça da Palmeira

Leça da Palmeira is a beautiful costal village that integrates the municipality of Matosinhos, in the district of Porto, owner of a magnificent ocean waterfront, pointed out by beautiful beaches, where we can find the Tides’s Swimming-Pool (Piscina das Marés), with its salty water, and the Boa Nova’s Tea House (Casa de Chá da Boa Nova), two remarkable contemporary architectural works, whose projects were executed by one of the most influent and awarded Architects of our time, the portuguese Álvaro Siza Vieira, Pritzker Prize in 1992.

In Leça da Palmeira it’s mandatory to visit Quinta da Conceição (Conceição’s Manor), which is the main public park within Matosinhos municipality, where we still may find several remains of the 15th century’s Nossa Senhora da Conceição Convent, from Saint Francis Order, established in Leça da Palmeira in 1481. The conversion of this ancient convent space in a public park was the authorship of the Architect Fernando Távora, another great name of the portuguese Architecture, also accountable for the projects regarding the Leixões comercial port surroundings, and the restoration of Quinta de Santiago’s palace (currently a Museum).

Matosinhos

The city of Matosinhos, to which municipality Leça da Palmeira belongs, is a costal city next to the city of Porto, only 5 Kms away from Porto’s historic center.

Matosinhos is also a city with an atlantic ocean waterfront and a beautiful large beach bathed by a calm sea, which enables the teaching and practice of water sports, such as surf, all year long. Matosinhos accommodates the commercial port of Leixões, the second largest artificial portuguese port, that has a long history of commercial and fishing activities.

The quality of the fresh fish that every day is unloaded on its piers is very famous and very much appreciated in Portugal and abroad, reason why most of it is exported to several world destinations, such as the U.S.A., Dubai and Japan. just to mention the top three. Matosinhos’s gastronomy, famous in all Portugal, through its large number of fish and seafood restaurants, owes to its extraordinary fish quality the designation of “World’s Best Fish”.

In Matosinhos, you can also visit Casa da Arquitectura – Centro Português de Arquitectura (The Architecture House – Architecture Portuguese Center), located right in the city’s heart, which is a cultural space dedicated to the promotion of the portuguese and international Architecture, and where you can see some exhibitions, attend to debates and experience guided tours, having the Architecture as the broad context.
