The Chess Section of Grupo Desportivo de Basquete de Leça, with the support of Matosinhos City Council, Matosinhos Sport, the União de Freguesias de Matosinhos e Leça da Palmeira, the Portuguese Chess Federation, the Porto Chess Association, and the Agrupamento de Escolas Eng. Fernando Pinto de Oliveira, is pleased to announce the fourth edition of the international chess tournament LEÇA CHESS OPEN – PORTUGAL 2025.
This event is part of the Portugal Chess Tour, the national circuit of classical tournaments promoted by the Portuguese Chess Federation, and will take place in Leça da Palmeira, Matosinhos, from July 31 to August 6, 2025. It will be played over 9 rounds, with a classical time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds increment per move.
The tournament venue is the Leça da Palmeira Municipal Sports Hall, a spacious facility of around 2,000 m², offering excellent playing conditions.
The previous edition hosted 210 players from 27 countries, including several Grandmasters, International Masters, and many promising young talents.
The LEÇA CHESS OPEN 2025 will be FIDE-rated and norm-eligible for both IM and GM titles, providing an excellent opportunity for players aiming to achieve international norms while competing against a strong and diverse field.
For the third consecutive year, the event will also include a Blitz Tournament, with 9 rounds, held on the morning of Sunday, August 3, 2025, at the same venue.
The tournament aims to promote chess, foster friendly interaction between players from around the world, and highlight the cultural and touristic charm of Leça da Palmeira – affectionately known as “the most beautiful place in Portugal” – and the city of Matosinhos.
